Omega-3 fatty acids are important elements which contribute in a positive way to the functioning of many body organs, such as the heart, the nervous system and the liver and kidneys. Because the human body does not naturally produce omega-3 fatty acids, you will need to add them either in your diet.
These fatty acids regulate among other hormone production and reduce inflammation and pain in the body.
Omega 3 Vitamin D
DHA (or the docosahexaenoic acid), EPA (or eicosapentaenoic acid) and ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) are the three omega-3 fatty acids. DHA and EPA can be found in fish oil, while the sources for ALA include fruits and vegetables, with the flaxseed oil having one of the highest concentrations of ALA.
DHA and EPA protect your body against cardiovascular diseases and lower the level of fats in the blood (the triglyceride number). The level of "good cholesterol", or HDL is raised by adding these fatty acids to your diet. Because cholesterol in time will clog the arteries, which in turn will increase the chances of a stroke, it is highly recommended to provide your organism with enough omega-3 fatty acids, as they lower the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
Taking fish oil supplements will protect your heart and prevent heart diseases due to abnormal heart rhythms, strokes and clogged blood vessels. Studies have shown that people who have already suffered from a heart attack have greater chances to recover and not to suffer another stroke if they are on a rich-omega-3 diet. Even the American Heart Association recommends adding 1g of EPA combined with DHA to your diet every day.
You can assimilate this amount of omega-3 fatty acids from fish meat or fish oil capsules. But you must not exaggerate with taking omega-3 fatty acids because a very high dosage can cause bleedings. That is why before taking any such supplements, you should consult with a specialist who would recommend you the dosage which suits you best.
Studies have also shown that omega-3 can be used in easing rheumatoid arthritis related pains and inflammations. A period of at least 3 months of regularly taking omega-3 supplements can reduce symptoms associated with joint tenderness and morning stiffness. The anti-inflammatory action of drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin can be enhanced if combined with omega-3 supplements.
There are some signs that fish oil can aid in the prevention of cancer or slowing down tumor growth. Other conditions, such as asthma, bipolar disorder or depression, lupus, and even schizophrenia can be aided by including omega-3 in your diet.
