Omega-3 Fatty Acids - WHAT is EPA and DHA?

Essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated oils. They are the good fats. They are essential because our body does not manufacture them, so they must be obtained through our diet on a daily basis for optimal health and well being. Essential fatty acids produce beneficial hormone-like compounds called the eicosanoids that affect the function of virtually every system and every cell in our body. The most important essential fatty acids are EPA and DHA which we will be discussing here. EPA and DHA are the Omega 3's and GLA (gamma linolenic acid) are Omega 6's. These are the good fats. These nutrients are responsible for cell flexibility, nerve function, mood support, and even weight control.

Omega 3 Vitamin D

The importance of essential fatty acids

Omega 3 Vitamin D

The body must receive a constant and balanced supply of essential fatty acids to ensure proper eicosanoid production. The eicosanoids are important because they regulate pain and swelling, so they have anti-inflammatory type mechanisms of action. They help maintain proper blood pressure, they help maintain proper cholesterol levels as we as triglyceride levels, and they provide fluidity in nerve transmission. Essential fatty acids are also recommended for many women during pregnancy and lactation and it is especially important for women to have good amounts of DHA because the baby is drawing upon her supply. DHA is critical for the healthy development of the brain, the eyes, and the nervous system.

So how do we get essential fatty acids in our diet? Where do they come from? The richest and most beneficial sources of essential fatty acids are found in cold-water fish, like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and herring. Borage and even primrose oils are also rich sources of gamma linolenic acid.

What is EPA?

Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is a long chain of Omega 3 polyunsaturated essential fatty acid that is found in fish. Omega 3's are essential because humans are unable to synthesize them and therefore they must be obtained through our diet.

EPA, eicosanoids, and inflammation; so beyond the cardioprotective effects of Omega 3's, EPA is believed to be beneficial for many autoimmune and inflammatory disorders including arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and psoriasis. Omega 3 appears to be beneficial for cardiovascular health by reducing the risk of cardiac risk and ischemic stroke. In fact, the evidence is so strong that the American Heart Association has stated that people who have elevated triglycerides may need 2 to 4 grams of EPA and DHA per day provided as a supplement. There are also several psychotherapeutic mechanisms of action that occur in the presence of essential fatty acid. There are several studies that have shown and have linked low seafood intake to major depression, postpartum depression, and schizophrenia as well as to the severity of depressive symptoms. Although research in this area is somewhat limited, EPA has at this point at least shown to improve symptoms of schizophrenia and depression and increase remission time in bipolar disorder.

What is DHA?

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a long chain polyunsaturated Omega 3 essential fatty acid from fish. Again Omega 3's are essential because humans are unable to synthesis them, meaning they must obtain these through diet. The brain is particularly very rich in DHA where it increases membrane fluidity, and supports functions such as learning memory and cognitive development. DHA is very stress protective. One of the apparent benefits of DHA is to protect against the harmful effects of stress. Supplementation with DHA has been shown to reduce elevations and aggression and hostility in response to psychological stress. In addition, DHA may help to protect against the increased risk of heart attack associated with stress and depression. In clinical trials, low levels of DHA in the body and low fish consumption has been associated with increased risk factors associated with cognitive impairments, especially Alzheimer's disease. During pregnancy and lactation, proper nutrition with long chain Omega 3's appears to be especially important for the heath of both mother and the child. Inadequate maternal Omega 3 intake during pregnancy is a risk factor for premature birth, low birth weight, diabetes, and postpartum depression. DHA also appeared to be very important for infants and their visual and cognitive development. A recent study showed that children whose mothers had taken cod liver oil during pregnancy and lactation had higher IQs at age 4 than the mothers who had taken a placebo.

If you are experiencing any signs of deficiency or any symptoms, I would recommend contacting your physician and exploring the possibility that you may be experiencing deficiencies in essential fatty acids. If you would like more information concerning essential fatty acids, you could visit our website at [http://www.freehealthstrategies.com].

Multiple Sclerosis Vitamins and Supplements

Multiple sclerosis vitamins are important consideration for anyone suffering from MS and there are a number of different vitamins and supplements that can be taken to help in your fight against multiple sclerosis. Vitamins and supplements are generally available from any good health food store bought before starting on any course you should have a personal consultation with a fully trained nutritionist or health practitioner.

Omega 3 Vitamin D

Three generally acknowledged supplements for multiple sclerosis are, vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium. Vitamin D is especially important in areas of the world that are exposed to less sunlight and can help reduced relapses. Calcium is important to maintain good bone health as there are links between osteoporosis and MS whilst magnesium helps produce cellular energy which is needed for nerve impulse transmission. For magnesium deficiencies are common in patients with multiple sclerosis and may well be caused by a diet high in saturated fats and refined foods.

Omega 3 Vitamin D

Other important multiple sclerosis vitamins include vitamin C, vitamin D, and vitamin E. The B vitamins tend to work together and are required by your body for the normal functioning of the nerves and brain, as well as helping with the release of energy from food. A deficiency in B12 can impair the processes of the immune system and it is thought that people with MS may be lacking in B12 because of an inability to absorb food properly in the gut. Vitamin E is an antioxidant vitamin which protects against free radical damage by slowing down the degenerative process and enhancing immune system response and is best taken with a supplements such as fish oils or evening primrose oil.

Along with multiple sclerosis vitamins, oils are also an important supplement with the most common ones taken being evening primrose oil, flax seed oil and fish oils. Evening primrose oil is a rich source of essential fatty acids and is highly in Omega 6 which helps regulate the immune system. Fish oil supplements are high in Omega 3 essential fatty acids and are needed to help the nervous system option normally as well as reducing inflammation. Unsurprisingly the incidence of MS is lower in countries where the intake of oily fish is high. Flax seed oil provide a good balance of Omega 6 and Omega 3 and is a good alternative to fish seed oils if you are a vegetarian.

Alongside the multiple sclerosis vitamins and supplements it is also important to maintain a healthy diet. Your diet is completely down to you and it is possibly the only thing that you are in total control of, so you should make every effort to maintain a diet that will help your MS. I changed my diet significantly a few years ago and the changes in my health have been remarkable. Initially I tried a few of the better known MS diets but found them to be very boring and restrictive, and made mealtimes more of a chore than anything else. I now have a solid plan that I follow which is a combination of vitamins, supplements, and an enjoyable diet. As your natural inner balance is restored, you will begin to experience renewed energy, absence of pain and aches, and more and more of your symptoms associated to Multiple Sclerosis will disappear... These your first steps to freedom from Multiple Sclerosis medication!

Top 5 Worst Foods You Can Eat That People Think Are Healthy

1- Fermented Cheese. Fermented, or ripened cheese is one of the most toxic foods known to man. The smallest quantity has a catastrophic effect on the system. It disturbs digestion and makes everything ferment in the digestive tract, so foods eaten don't benefit the body. According to Albert Mosséri, a European natural hygienist and researcher, fermented cheeses can create or exacerbate the following conditions: infection, fever, headaches, nausea, cold sensitivity, bad stools, bad digestion. Fermented (or ripened) cheese includes many French cheeses such as: camembert, roquefort, parmesan, blue cheese, aged goat cheese, brie, etc. Fresh or cooked cheese, aren't as bad, but are not recommended either. Their consumption leads to other problems. So in conclusion, no cheese is recommended for health,
but fermented cheese should be avoided like poison.

Omega 3 Vitamin D

2- Fish and Seafood. Fish is getting a good reputation these days. We are told to eat
fish due to its richness in omega 3 oils. That is too bad, because fish and seafood
are some of the worst foods we can eat.

Omega 3 Vitamin D

Fish has a tendency to putrefy much faster than meat - perhaps because it contains
more protein. If you put a piece of meat and a piece of fish next to each other in the
open air, you'll see that fish will go bad much faster. In our digestive tract, heat and
humidity encourage this putrefaction. The poisons then created from the
putrefaction of flesh foods, particularly fish, are dangerous to the system.

On top of that, there is absolutely no safe fish on this planet anymore. They are all
more or less contaminated with heavy metals such as mercury, whose effects on the
human body are extremely detrimental and difficult to deal with. We know that 40
tons of mercury are released into the US by power plants using coal combustion.
The mercury contained in coal moves through the air, finds its way into the water
and then accumulates in the flesh of fish that live in it. For that reason, there is no
safe fish anymore. Just one serving can contain enough mercury or other heavy
metal to contaminate a person. For all of those reasons, I would recommend
avoiding fish like your life depended on it. Is seafood any better? It's actually worst.
Animals such as lobsters, oysters, etc., are literally filters of the ocean. A large
quantity of water goes through them which makes them some of the most
contaminated "foods" on this planet.

3- Spicy Food. Spicy food is any food where strong (or mild) spices has been added
to it. Spices include: black pepper, white pepper, cayenne pepper, ginger, chili
peppers, raw garlic, raw onion, etc, and all the foods that contain them: kimchee,
hot sauces, Tabasco, etc. The consumption of spices is extremely detrimental to
health. They irritate the entire digestive tract, create mucus (that the body produces
to protect itself), and wreck digestion. Spices were first used as medicines, out of
superstition, and then in food. People became quickly addicted to the stimulation
they provide and found themselves progressively unable to enjoy food in its natural
state. The worst food you can eat is spicy food, such as Indian, Thai, Mexican, etc.
In someone not used to it, it will cause diarrhea. The person that is used to it has
undergone a process of morbid adaptation, where the protecting itself from the
harsh spices by hardening its surfaces. This protects against the harmful effect of
spices to some extent, but at the same time it greatly diminishes assimilation, no
the food eaten doesn't benefit the body very much. Children and anyone with
normal instincts refuse spicy foods. Personally, I refuse to eat spicy food, whether
the spices are in a raw dish or a cooked one.

4- Coffee, Black Chocolate and Cacao -- First premise: coffee, chocolate and cacao
(raw or cooked) are stimulants. They contain certain substances (caffeine and
theobromine) that disturb the nervous system. If a person is eating a more natural
diet, these poisons have an even more disturbing effect on the system. For a raw-
foodist, one cup of coffee has the effect of maybe four cups for someone eating a
standard American diet. Personally, half a cup of coffee taken in the morning will
disturb my sleep at night, while my dad can drink a cup in the evening and still fall
asleep. However, as Shelton wrote: "toleration to poisons is merely a slow method of
dying. Instead of seeing in the phenomena of toleration something to be sought
after, it is something to seek to avoid the necessity for." A detoxified person is
much like a child: she will strongly react to the smallest dose of any intoxicant.

So there is no room for compromise with caffeinated drinks and cacao products,
which include: coffee, hot chocolate, black chocolate, raw cacao beans, black tea,
green tea, maté tea, etc.

5- Wine, and alcohol -- According to toxicology (the branch of pharmacology that
deals with the nature and effects and treatments of poisons), alcohol is classified as
a protoplasmic poison, because it is poisoning to both plants and animals - from
the smallest microbe to the most complex animal. Alcohol kills microbes but also
kills the cells of a complex organism, such as the human being. It is an intoxicant
that ruins millions of lives and kills people by the thousand each day, directly or
indirectly.

Unfortunately, it has become a social habit in many parts of the world to intoxicate
oneself with alcohol. This poison habit is so prevalent and is such an intricate part
of our lives that is now considered abnormal to abstain from this popular intoxicant.
Most health professionals are aware of the ill effects of alcohol, but few will
recommend to give it up completely. They will talk about "moderation." "Drink, they
will say, but be moderate." How can someone be moderate with such an unhealthy
and addictive product? To my understanding, moderation is only valid for the
healthy factors of life, not unhealthy one. For example, no doctor will tell you, "be
moderate in smoking," although that is what they used to say. Can we be moderate
with cocaine too?

Now, my readers should understand that when someone eats a healthy diet, alcohol
has an even more disastrous effect on the body. That is because the body has
stopped protecting itself from the various poisons found in a modern diet, because
it is no longer or less in contact with them. Just like a child who has never taken
alcohol will strongly react to it when drinking it for the first time. So my dear
readers, even that little glass of wine has a catastrophic effect on the system. And
when drunk with a meal, it makes everything ferment in the digestive tract. No if
you cannot resist that glass of wine, only have a little and on an empty stomach
only, not with a meal.

DEVA Vegan Omega-3 DHA is a quality product derived from algae and packaged in non-animal softgels made from carrageenan and starch. This makes an excellent alternative to fish oil and can be confidently used by vegetarians and vegans alike. Vegans are particularly prone to diets low in omega-3 fatty acids. DHA is a long chain polyunsaturated omega-3 oil. It is an essential fatty acid, meaning that the body doesn’t produce it by itself and it must be obtained in the diet. It is known to be a major building block of human brain tissue and eye tissue, and studies have shown it may help cognition in Alzheimer’s disease.1 In fact, the human brain consists of about sixty percent fat and essential fatty acids like DHA are vital to its structure and function. DHA has been found to be crucial to fetal brain development, as well as the brain development of infants and children. It is also known to affect the heart and enhance stroke volume and cardiac output during exercise.2 This is just one of many studies that have shown that it helps improve cardiovascular health* DHA has been found to also help cardiovascular health by reducing triglyceride levels and raising HDL (good) cholesterol levels.3 Unfortunately, our Western diet likely does not contain adequate amounts of DHA and fish oils may contain pollutants like mercury and dioxin.4 Pollutants may be retained in fish oils collected from contaminated fish unless thorough distillation and filtration are employed

Zwilling J.A. Henckels DVD CD Duplicator Syntha 6 Protein

How Much Fat Do You Need?

Fat is one of the three main sources of calories in our diet (in addition to carbohydrate and protein). It provides nine calories per gram, which means that each gram of fat we consume gives us nine calories. For example, if a product contains 10 grams of fat, it would provide 90 calories from fat (9 calories per gram x 10 gm of fat). The other two main sources of calories in our diet, carbohydrate and protein, each provide four calories per gram. Notice that fat provides more calories than carbohydrates and proteins combined, which means that fat is the richest source of calories in our diet. That's why it is important to watch your fat intake if you're trying to lose weight. If you currently have a high-fat diet, then reducing your fat intake is one of the quickest ways to cut calories. Notice that I said "reducing your fat intake" and not "eliminating" it.

Omega 3 Vitamin D

Research has shown that a high-fat diet not only contributes to obesity, high cholesterol, and heart disease, but also to certain types of cancer. Be assured, however, that some fat is necessary to a healthy diet. You need some fat in your diet in order for your body to function properly. Here are just a few functions of fat:

Omega 3 Vitamin D

-provides energy

-is necessary for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E, and K

-insulates internal organs

-is necessary for immune system

-is necessary for the production of hormones

-is necessary for nervous system function

-contributes to healthy skin and hair

-is a good source of vitamin E and essential fatty acids (EFA's)

As mentioned above, certain fats provide our bodies with "essential fatty acids" (EFA). EFA's are essential to us because our body does not produce them on its own, therefore we must consume them. One EFA you may have heard of is omega-3 fatty acid. This one has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties, helps to lower blood lipids, such as cholesterol, and helps to prevent blood clots, all of which help reduce the risk of heart disease. Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish, especially salmon, albacore tuna, and trout; shellfish; flaxseed; and walnuts.

When consuming fat, it is important to choose "good fats," or unsaturated fats more than saturated and trans fats. Unsaturated fats are heart-healthy since they don't contribute to hardening of the arteries, whereas saturated and trans fats elevate cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Sources of "good fats" include vegetable oils, especially canola, olive, and peanut, soft margarines (trans fat-free), nuts, seeds, olives, salad dressings, etc. Sources of "bad fats," or saturated fats, include animal sources, such as butter, whole milk, cheese, eggs, meat (especially the visible fat on the edge), poultry (especially the skin), lard, and even a couple of plant sources, such as coconut and tropical oils (e.g., palm and palm kernel oil).

Trans fat has gotten a lot of media attention lately and is now included on food labels because of its association with heart disease. Research has shown that trans fats are just as detrimental to our health as saturated fats. It is commonly found in hard margarines, shortenings, and frying fats. Trans fat is made by a process called hydrogenation and is often added to packaged convenience foods, such as cookies, cakes, pies, doughnuts, crackers, and brownies, in order to improve the products' texture, taste, and shelf-life.

So, how much fat do you need? Well, first you need to know how many calories your body needs daily because your diet should be comprised of about 25-30% fat. That means 25-30% of your calories should come from fat. If you're not sure how many calories you need, you can easily find a calorie calculator online or you can search for the article I wrote about how to calculate your calorie needs. If you are overweight or underweight, be sure to use your ideal body weight or goal weight to determine your calorie needs and not your current weight. Once you know how many calories your body needs, then you can determine how much fat you need.

Here's a sample calculation for an individual who needs 2000 calories per day:

2000 calories x 30% (0.30) = 600 calories

600 calories per day / 9 calories per gram = 67 grams per day

2000 calories x 25% (0.25) = 500 calories

500 calories per day / 9 calories per gram = 56 grams per day

Therefore, this individual needs about 56-67 grams of fat per day.

As I've said in other articles, I don't think it's necessary to count anything for the rest of your life in order to lose weight and keep it off, whether it's calories, fat grams, carbs, points, etc. I hope that you will simply use this equation to determine how much fat you need and then compare that to what you are consuming on average. (Just count your fat intake for a few typical days). Then, you can adjust your diet accordingly. Remember that consuming too little or too much fat can put your health at risk. If you find that you are way under-consuming fat, then give yourself some more leniency. However, if you find that you are over-consuming fat, then try and cut back a bit more until you are in a healthy range.
