Omega-3 fats may have a mile-long list of health benefits - it can stave off the growth of some cancers, protect against heart disease, reduce chronic inflammation, fight depression, and improve mood and memory. Omega-3 fatty acids can lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure, which is normally a desirable effect among patients. However, you cannot take too much omega-3 fats if you are already taking medication for blood pressure or blood sugar, as both of them might cause your blood pressure or glucose levels to plummet. This will make you feel dizzy and experience tremors. Talk to your doctor about taking omega-3 supplements for your circulatory problems and see if you can reduce or stop taking your medications.
Thin blood
Fish oil thins the blood naturally, which is why it is used to prevent strokes and heart attacks. However, this effect can be compounded if you already take anticoagulants - medications that thin the blood. Anticoagulants are usually prescribed for patients who have artificial heart valves or other conditions that place them at risk for unwanted blood clots. Too much fish oil with anticoagulants may cause your blood to become too thin.
Vitamin toxicity symptoms
This problem is caused more by taking the wrong kinds of omega-3 fats than the nutrient itself. Some low-grade omega-3 supplements are made of cod liver oil, which contains high amounts of vitamin A and D. Beyond their recommended daily allowance, these vitamins can become toxic to the body. Symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity include muscle weakness, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and bone pain. Symptoms of Vitamin A toxicity include drowsiness, irritability, abdominal pain, and nausea. To avoid experiencing these problems, make sure you buy only pharmaceutical-grade omega-3 fatty acids made from salmon, tuna, and mackerel.
